Livermore - Barbera (Italian grape)
Cabernet franc
Santa Barbara – Chardonnay

Napa and Sonoma - Cabernet Sauvignon, …Robert Mondavi family (Costco), Buena Vista (first in CA)

Country speciality:
Germany- Riesling.
Portugal- Porto (fortified wine).
Spain – sherry (fortified, white grape), 雪梨酒.

Chile - cabernet Sauvignon (different from others), brand – concha y tora (Costco)

Argentina – Malbec (Mendoza region),brand – Emilia (Costco)

France – Bordeaux (波尔多), Pouilly-Fuissé (white), Dom Pérignon – champagne (white w/ carbonation), Lafite Rothschild (拉菲) (Asia Saga)

My safe choice: rather (then):
Argentina or Chile (old world).

      Single malt vs blend (Dewar, Chivas and John Walker-my favorite “black label”, Costco)

substitute- Kirkland 12 years

Scotch (Scotland, barley) vs bourbon (bourbon county, Kentucky, corn) vs Tennessee Whiskey (51% corn) and bourbon, in the US (Costco)

England or Scotland-whisky = scotch, Ireland = Irish whiskey (not whisky)

Vodka - origin of Poland and Russia, from potato Alaska vodka (anchorage distillery)

Gin - from juniper berry (杜松子),金/琴酒 Bombay Sapphire(Costco)

Gordon’s London dry gin (Hemingway’s favorite)

Rum - from sugarcane, 朗姆酒
      Coconut rum(Costco)

Tequila- from blue agave(蓝龙舌兰)
Most aged - 3 years, anejo
100% blue agave (Kirkland)

Brandy - distilled from wine (or fruit mash),
France: cognac (aged: VS – 2,3; VSOP – 4,5; XO- 6 and up)
Peru: pisco

Livermore Costco - much better price
BevMo

Liqueur: sweetened liquor

After dinner wine (liqueur, fortified wine and brandy)

Strong: brandy – COINTREAU; Kahlua (rum and arabica coffee, from Mexico, available in Costco)

Less strong: port, Sherry, amarula (South Africa, made from cream and juice of the marula tree. The tree is also called elephant tree because the elephants like to drink its juice.)

Cocktail: components - base, modifying agents, special agents (flavoring and coloring)

Base: Whiskey, vodka, gin, rum, tequila, brandy

The simplest:

2 ingredients -
Whiskey and coca
Vodka and orange juice
Gin and tonic.

Tonic water

3 ingredients -
Tequila - Tommy's margarita (2 tequila, 1 lime juice, 1/2 agave syrup. In shaker over ice until chill, strain)
Rum - pina colada (2 rum, 1 coconut cream, 1 pineapple juice. Blend until frosty and creamy)

Basic ingredients:
Base, sour, sweet (you could google for cocktail with any ingredients, then only use the most basic ingredients.)

Examples:

Daiquiri (search for “cocktail with rum”, “cocktail with rum and lime juice”)

Classic Manhattan

My favorites:

Whiskey sour (whiskey + sweet and sour mix:)

Margarita ( mix or ready-to-drink from Costco)

Gin and tonic (gin + tonic water)

Martini (vodka/gin + dry vermouth:), Shake not stir – James Bond

Caipirinha (cachaca from sugarcane), national drink of Brazil Espresso vodka (dexpresso vodka)

For Winter (warm cocktail)
Sea and scotch hot chocolate:
1.5 scotch, 3 hot chocolate, 3 frothed milk

Classical hot toddy (hot toddy, or hot whiskey (Ireland, mix of liquor, water, honey, herb, spice))

Combined the first four ingredients into the bottom of a warmed mug.

Colorful layers:
Patriotic layered cocktail

Sweet cocktails

Strong - base Cointreau, or Amaretto (Italian, avai. At Costco)

Flyffy dog: Cointreau + Bailey (Irish cream, Costco)

Less strong - less base
Pina colada, rum + mix

Non- alcoholic cocktail:
Apricot slush (apricot juice + coconut milk/juice)

6 cocktails

six basic drinks are the Daiquiri (rum), the Jack Rose (Hemingway “the sun also rises”;John Steinbeck (the grapes of wrath) favorite; applejack - Apple brandy, in colonial times), the Manhattan (whiskey), the Martini (vodka or gin, shake not stir), the Old Fashioned, and the Sidecar (brandy)

Daiquiri

Shake with lots of finely crushed ice and strain well into a chilled cocktail glass.

Jack Rose

Shake vigorously with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon, if desired.

Manhattan

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail glass and serve garnished with a Maraschino cherry.

Martini

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, twist lemon peel over the top and serve garnished with an olive, preferably one stuffed with any kind of nut. Embury also states that sherry is a nice substitute for vermouth.

Old Fashioned

In an old-fashioned glass, add bitters to simple syrup and stir. Add about 1 ounce of whiskey and stir again. Add two cubes of cracked, but not crushed, ice and top off with the rest of the whiskey. Twist lemon peel over the top and serve garnished with the lemon peel and a maraschino cherry.

Sidecar

Shake vigorously with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon, if desired.

Amaretto Sour

Ingredients:
1.5 oz amaretto liqueur
0.75 oz bourbon
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1 tsp simple syrup
1 egg white。

Instructions
Add all ingredients into a shaker without ice and dry-shake to foam the egg white. Add ice and shake again. Strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass. OPTIONAL: Garnish with an orange slice and brandied cherry.

Dexpresso: (espresso vodka)
1.5 vodka
1 espresso
1 Kahlua
0.5 syrup

If you prefer warm, you could warm the espresso, syrup and Kahlua, then add vodka.

Caprihina:
1 lime (cut into 4 chunks)
2 oz cachasha
2 tsp sugar
Ice cubes

Process:

  1. Put lime chunks in the shaker
  2. Add sugar
  3. Use muddler to crush the lime/sugar mix
  4. Put the muddled lime/sugar mix into rock glass
  5. Top the glass with ice cubes
  6. Add cachaca

How to drink: use straw to drink from the bottom, better finish before ice melts.
